Glacier-Waterton: cycling Pincher Creek to Waterton Lakes National Park

Today was our last stretch into Waterton National Park. It was only 35 miles, yet a lot of climbing right from the beginning. We left early again to beat the wind and the heat. As we got closer to the mountains, we saw a field of wind towers. It really gets windy in this area!

The rest stop listed on our route didn't open until 10 am. We reached it by 9 am and kept on cycling. The night before, I'd searched for anything between Pincher Creek and Waterton Lakes. Beside an ice cream shop that opened at 12 noon, there was nothing, not even a gas station or a Tim Horton's.

Yet, finally, as we really doubted we could climb any more hills, a scenic overlook appeared with a lone picnic table. A couple of other cyclists from our group were eating their packed lunches; and, we joined them. It was a majestic view of the mountains and valley below. A very much appreciated rest (although if it had at least a vault toilet, it would be even more appreciated).

After our rest stop, it was only 8 more miles to enter the National Parks, where the views are breathtaking! The awesome mountains and lakes cannot be captured well in my cellphone camera. Just amazing views!

And, even though we arrived before noon, we were lucky enough that the hotel had our room ready for us for super early check-in. It felt wonderful to escape into the air conditioning as the temperatures reached 90 F again.

NOTES:
- the only washrooms found so far: Marina public washroom and the washroom in the Information Centre.
